Most family reunion shirt ideas come down to four pieces of information: the family name, the year, the place and a line that says something about the family. Get those four fields right, make ordering easy for one organizer buying for 20 to 60 relatives, and a single listing can turn into your biggest order of the summer.

This guide covers the design styles that work, 40 original family reunion shirt sayings, how to run group orders with sizes from babies to 4XL, a worked pricing example and when to list. If you’re new to personalized products, start with our guide to personalized print-on-demand, because nearly every reunion order is personalized.

Key takeaways

  • Build every design around four fields: family name, year, place and a saying.
  • Your buyer is usually one organizer ordering for many relatives, so size collection and a clear deadline matter as much as the design.
  • Adult, youth, toddler and baby sizes are usually different blank products, so plan matching listings or a custom order.
  • Group orders can earn more per shirt than single sales, but bigger sizes cost more and Etsy charges its listing fee on every extra quantity.
  • List from February to May: most reunions happen in summer, and organizers order weeks ahead.

The four fields every family reunion shirt needs

FieldExamplesDesign notes
Family nameThe Carters; Carter-Owens Family; Descendants of James and Ruth CarterBlended families often want two surnames or the founding couple’s first names
Year2027; 25th Annual; Est. 1952Make it large: the year is what makes each shirt a keepsake
PlaceSavannah, Georgia; Lake Hartwell; Grandma’s FarmA town, a lake or a family home all work
Saying or theme“Every branch came home”Original, short and readable in a group photo

Ask for all four in the personalization box, in this order, and show an example of the finished wording in your photos.

Two optional extras sell well: the names of the founding couple or elders, and a branch name or color for each side of the family (more on color-coding below). Anything longer belongs on the back of the shirt.

Family reunion shirt designs: 10 styles that work

One strong layout can serve hundreds of families, because the personalization makes each one unique. These styles are established formats in the niche; the execution and wording should be your own.

  1. Family tree. Roots and branches with the surname in the trunk. The most classic reunion layout.
  2. Camp patch. A vintage summer-camp badge: “Camp [Surname], Family Edition,” with pines and a lake.
  3. Varsity lettering. Collegiate-style surname and year, like a team shirt for the family.
  4. Retro sunset road trip. A 1970s sunset and a station wagon, for families who travel to meet.
  5. Hometown map. The outline of the state or county where the family started, with a heart on the town.
  6. Generations stack. Horizontal bars listing each generation, like a family timeline.
  7. Heritage crest. An original crest with symbols the family chooses (a farm, an anchor, a church, a skyline).
  8. Jersey back. Surname across the shoulders and the year as the number, with a small front design.
  9. Memorial tribute. A respectful design honoring an elder, with a photo the family provides.
  10. Cookout and games. A grill, a horseshoe pit and a card table, for the reunion’s real events.

How to take a family reunion group order

The organizer is your real customer. They’re collecting sizes from dozens of relatives, chasing money and working to a date, so the easier you make their job, the more likely they are to pick your shop. There are three ways to set it up:

SetupHow it worksGood forWatch out for
Relatives order themselvesThe organizer shares your listing and the exact wording; each household orders its own sizesBig, spread-out families; no money to collectWording must match exactly on every order; late orderers miss the date
Organizer orders everythingOne checkout with every size, shipped to one addressFamilies who meet in one place; one deadlineThe organizer pays up front; double-check the size counts
Custom orderThe organizer sends a size list; you quote a total and create a one-off listingMixed adult, youth and baby sizes; special requestsMore manual work: you place the production order yourself

Whichever setup you use, confirm the final wording in writing through Etsy messages before anything prints.

The kids’ size problem trips up most new sellers. With most POD integrations, each listing is tied to one blank product, so an adult tee can’t carry youth, toddler or baby sizes. Create a matching set (adult tee, youth tee, toddler tee, baby bodysuit) with the same design, and link them to each other in the descriptions, or use a custom order for families who need all four.

Give organizers a simple sheet to collect sizes. These columns cover almost every order:

Baby JuneBlue (Robert’s side)Baby bodysuit12M1

Example size sheet. Ask the organizer to total each product and size before ordering, and set a date for collecting sizes.

Pricing a family reunion order: a worked example

Group orders usually earn more per shirt than single sales, for two reasons: additional items usually ship for much less than the first, and Etsy’s payment processing flat fee is charged once per order. Here’s an illustrative 30-shirt order for a US seller with free shipping: 24 standard-size tees at $22.99 and six 2XL–3XL tees at $25.99.

LineAmount
Buyer pays (24 × $22.99 + 6 × $25.99, free shipping)$707.70
Etsy listing fees ($0.20 × 30 items)−$6.00
Etsy transaction fee (6.5%)−$46.00
Payment processing (3% + $0.25, once per order)−$21.48
Tees from your provider (24 × $8.80 + 6 × $11.00)−$277.20
Shipping to one address ($4.75 + 29 × $2.40)−$74.35
Profit$282.67 (about $9.42 per shirt)
Profit if the order came from an Offsite Ad (15%, capped at $100)$182.67 (about $6.09 per shirt)

Illustrative costs: the big-size price and the $2.40 additional-item shipping are examples, so check your print partner’s current rates.

For comparison, a single tee at $22.99 shipped on its own leaves about $6.81 with the same costs. Two lessons: charge more for 2XL and up, because they cost more to make, and remember that Etsy caps the Offsite Ads fee at $100 per order, which matters on big group orders. The current rates are in Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy, and our guide to pricing print-on-demand products covers discounts and size-based pricing.

When to list family reunion shirts

Most reunions happen in summer, often around a long weekend, and organizers plan months ahead. Work backward from the reunion date:

StepTiming before the reunionExample for a July 10, 2027 reunion
Listings live and found in search3–5 monthsFebruary–March
Organizer picks a design and wording8–10 weeksEarly May
Sizes collected and order placed5–6 weeksLate May to early June
Proof approved, production and shipping3–4 weeksJune
Shirts in hand with a safety buffer1–2 weeksLate June

Production and delivery times vary by provider and season. State your order-by date in every listing.

Many reunions are also timed around the 4th of July or Thanksgiving, so there are natural crossovers with our 4th of July shirt ideas and Thanksgiving designs. The seasonal calendar puts all of these on one timeline.

Color-code the family by branch

A common reunion format gives each branch of the family (for example, each of the founding couple’s children and their descendants) its own shirt color, with the same design on every shirt. It makes the group photo, helps cousins figure out who belongs to whom, and turns one design into several color variations on one listing.

Adult, youth and baby shirts in four colors, all printed with the same white family-tree design, laid on grass
One design in several branch colors, from adult tees to a baby bodysuit.
  • Pick colors with contrast. Choose shirt colors your design reads well on, or make a one-color white-ink version for dark shirts.
  • Check availability. Make sure every branch color exists in adult, youth and baby sizes with your provider.
  • Add a legend to the back. A small key listing each branch and its color is a detail families love.

Our guide to t-shirt colors covers contrast and how many colors to offer.

Proofing checklist before anything prints

One typo on 40 shirts is 40 reprints you pay for, so proof every group order against the organizer’s written approval:

  • Surname spelling, including hyphens, accents and capitals (McDonald, not Mcdonald).
  • Plurals, not apostrophes. “The Carters” is plural; “The Carter’s” is wrong. Names ending in s, x, z, ch or sh usually take -es: the Joneses, the Sanchezes.
  • The year and the number, such as “25th Annual,” which is easy to get wrong when copying last year’s design.
  • The place name, exactly as the family writes it.
  • Size counts, which should add up to the headcount on the organizer’s sheet.
  • Branch colors, matched to the right names.

Set group orders to manual approval with your provider so nothing goes to production until the proof is approved. Memorial photos need one more check: make sure the scan is sharp enough for the print size.

Free print DPI checkerCheck whether a scanned family photo or design will print sharply at the size you need before you send it to production.

Family reunions overlap with other personalized family products. Our grandma shirt ideas cover name-list designs for grandparents, and churches run similar group orders, as our Christian shirt guide explains. For more niches built on repeat occasions, see the print-on-demand niches guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I charge for custom family reunion shirts?
Price from your costs up, not from the cheapest listing you can find. In our illustrative example, $22.99 for standard sizes and $25.99 for 2XL and up leaves roughly $9 per shirt on a 30-shirt order, because extra items ship for less and the processing flat fee is charged once.
Can I offer kids’ sizes in the same listing as adult shirts?
Usually not with POD integrations, because adult tees, youth tees, toddler tees and baby bodysuits are different blank products. Make a matching set of listings with the same design, or handle the whole family as one custom order.
What should go on the back of a family reunion shirt?
The back is ideal for details that don’t fit the front: the names of the elders or founding couple, the family’s branches, a list of past reunion locations, or the year’s theme. Keep the front bold and simple so it reads in the group photo.
Can I put a memorial photo on a reunion shirt?
Yes, and many families want to honor an elder this way. Use a photo the family owns, ask for the highest-resolution scan they have, check it will print sharply at the size you need, and keep the wording simple and respectful.
Do I need to add an AI disclosure to reunion shirt listings?
If the design was created with AI tools from your prompts, Etsy’s Creativity Standards ask you to say so in the description, and print-on-demand listings also need your production partner added. Both take a minute and protect your shop.
