Etsy Tags for Print-on-Demand: 13-Tag Formula + Examples

How to choose all 13 Etsy tags for print-on-demand: the 20-character rule, multi-word phrases, what attributes already cover, and example tag sets for 3 niches.

Thirteen blank paper tags hanging from an empty search bar above a folded t-shirt and a mug

Every Etsy listing gets 13 tags, and each one is a chance to match a search a buyer actually types. On print-on-demand (POD) listings, where many shops sell similar t-shirts, mugs and sweatshirts, tags are often the difference between a design that gets seen and one that sits at zero views.

This guide covers Etsy’s tag rules, a simple formula for filling all 13 slots, and complete example tag sets for three POD niches that you can adapt to your own designs. If you list in the evenings after work, the formula is the time-saver: once you have it, a full set of tags takes minutes, not an evening of guessing.

Key takeaways

  • Use all 13 tags. Each can be up to 20 characters, including spaces.
  • Write multi-word phrases a buyer would type, not single words.
  • Cover different angles: what it is, who it’s for, the occasion, the style and the motif.
  • Don’t retype your title, and skip plurals, misspellings and anything your category or attributes already say.
  • Never use brand names, characters or trademarked phrases in tags.

  • Allowed characters: letters, numbers and spaces. Apostrophes and hyphens work inside a phrase, but a tag can’t start with one. Most other punctuation, including ampersands, isn’t allowed.
  • Capitalization doesn’t matter to search, so there’s no need to add a capitalized version of a tag you already have.
  • Every character counts, spaces included. “labor and delivery nurse shirt” is 30 characters and won’t fit; “delivery nurse shirt” is exactly 20.

Those are the hard limits. The rest of this guide is about the choices that affect whether buyers find you.

How Etsy search uses your tags

Etsy search works in two stages. First it finds listings that match what the shopper typed, using signals such as your title, tags, category and attributes. Then it ranks those matches using factors like relevance, how shoppers engage with the listing, your shop’s customer service record, shipping price and how recently the item was listed. In its recent seller guidance, Etsy has also said it takes a more holistic view of each listing, including the description, the first photo and reviews. (Our explainer on how the Etsy algorithm works goes into both stages.)

Tags do most of their work in the first stage. A tag won’t make a weak listing rank, but a missing phrase can keep a strong listing out of results for a search it deserves to win. That leads to a few practical rules, most of them straight from Etsy’s own seller guidance:

  • Use all 13. Every empty slot is a search you can’t match.
  • Use multi-word phrases. Shoppers search in phrases (“retro nurse shirt”), so a phrase tag matches real searches better than three separate single words.
  • Skip plurals and misspellings. Etsy matches singular and plural forms by their root word and redirects common typos, so “nurse shirts” and “nurce shirt” waste slots.
  • Don’t duplicate your category and attributes. Etsy says they act like tags already, so if your listing sits in the T-shirts category, a tag that only says “t shirt” adds nothing.

Relevance cuts the other way, too. A tag that doesn’t describe the item might earn a few extra impressions, but shoppers who click and don’t find what they wanted won’t buy, and how shoppers engage with a listing is part of how Etsy ranks it. Tags are one piece of a bigger picture; our Etsy SEO guide for POD sellers covers the rest.

A formula for filling all 13 tags

The easiest way to avoid 13 versions of the same phrase is to give each tag a job. For a typical POD listing, this split works well:

AngleTagsExamples (retro labor and delivery nurse tee)
What it is3labor and delivery, delivery nurse shirt, maternity nurse tee
Who it’s for2gift for new nurse, nurse coworker gift
Occasion2nurses week gift, nursing school grad
Style and motif2retro nurse shirt, stork nurse tee
Synonyms and related roles2ob nurse shirt, mother baby nurse
Tone and product details2cute nurse tshirt, unisex nurse tee

13 tags in total. Shift the split to suit the design: a holiday design needs more occasion tags, an evergreen hobby design more identity and style tags.

Give every tag a job: what it is, who it’s for, the occasion, the style and the motif.
  • What it is: the identity plus the product, in the words buyers use. This overlaps with your title, and that’s fine for a tag or two.
  • Who it’s for: many POD products are bought as gifts, so recipient phrases (“gift for grandma”, “nurse coworker gift”) match the way gift shoppers search.
  • Occasion: birthdays, holidays, graduations, retirements and industry events like Nurses Week (May 6–12 in the US) or Teacher Appreciation Week (the first full week of May). Etsy’s latest title guidance suggests keeping gift and occasion phrases out of the title unless they’re essential to the item, which makes tags their natural home.
  • Style and motif: words like retro, vintage, minimalist or watercolor, plus the main visual element of the design.
  • Synonyms and related roles: buyers call the same thing by different names: tee, t-shirt and shirt; birder and bird watcher; OB nurse and labor and delivery nurse.
  • Tone and product details: the feel of the design (cute, funny, cozy) and practical details a ready-to-buy shopper might type, such as “unisex” or “ceramic coffee mug”.

Example tag sets for three POD niches

Here are complete sets for three common POD products. Every tag is 20 characters or fewer, and each row covers a different angle. Treat them as a starting point: check the phrases against Etsy’s search suggestions in your market before you use them. (If the nurse example fits your shop, our list of nurse shirt ideas by specialty has more angles to tag.)

Illustrative examples. Swap in the phrases your design actually supports, and drop any that don’t describe it accurately.

A few things to notice:

  • No tag repeats another. Words like “nurse” and “mug” recur, but every phrase targets a different search.
  • Every tag is true. “Unisex sweatshirt” only belongs on a unisex product, and “fathers day gift” only makes sense if the design suits the occasion.
  • Colors and sizes are missing on purpose. Those belong in attributes and variations, which Etsy already reads.
  • Gift phrases are spread out. Each set has several, because gift buyers search by recipient and occasion, not by product name.

Weak tags vs strong tags

Most wasted tag slots fall into a handful of patterns. Here’s how to fix each one:

Weak tagWhat’s wrongStronger replacement

nurse shirtsA plural of a phrase you already have; Etsy matches plurals anywaynurses week gift
t shirtYour category already says itretro nurse shirt

Replacements use the labor and delivery nurse tee from the example sets above.

Where to find tag phrases buyers actually use

  1. Etsy’s search bar. Start typing your niche and note the autocomplete suggestions. They reflect what shoppers actually search, in their own words.
  2. Your own Stats. Etsy’s Stats page shows the search terms that brought shoppers to your listings. Reuse phrases that bring visits on related designs (here’s how to read your Etsy stats).
  3. Buyer language. Read reviews and questions on similar items. If buyers write “my whole OB team loved these”, that tells you what they call themselves.
  4. The calendar. List the occasions your niche celebrates: awareness weeks, graduation season, holidays, retirements and “first” milestones. Add those tags a few weeks before the season, when gift shoppers start searching. Our print-on-demand seasonal calendar lists the dates and when to list.
  5. Keyword research tools. Third-party Etsy keyword tools estimate search demand and competition. Treat their numbers as rough guides rather than exact counts, and start with the free methods in our Etsy keyword research guide.

Attributes: extra tags you don’t have to write

Etsy says the category and attributes you choose act like tags, which means they help your listing match searches without using any of your 13 slots. For POD products:

  • Pick the most specific category. T-shirts under clothing is better than a broad parent category.
  • Fill in every attribute that’s true, such as primary and secondary color, occasion and holiday, wherever your category offers them.
  • Don’t spend tags repeating them exactly. Use the slot for a phrase your category and attributes don’t already cover.

If you publish through a POD provider, check which category and attributes it set on Etsy. Your provider’s help pages will tell you which fields are safe to edit directly on Etsy; with some integrations, editing the title or description there can break the product sync.

How tags, title and description work together

Think of the three as a team rather than three places to paste the same keywords:

  • Title: a short, readable description of what the item is and its key traits. Etsy’s current guidance favors clear titles over long keyword lists.
  • Tags: the angles the title doesn’t cover, such as recipients, occasions, synonyms and styles. Your main phrase can appear in both, but don’t spend all 13 tags retyping the title.
  • Description: written for the buyer, with the details that help them decide (who it’s for, sizing and care) and, if you used AI, the disclosure Etsy requires.

If you’ve been stuffing every variation into your title, moving those extra phrases into tags is the easiest win: the title gets easier to read, and the tags stop repeating it. For the other two pieces, see how to write Etsy titles that rank and our Etsy description template.

Tag mistakes that cost POD listings views

  • Copying a competitor’s tags wholesale. Their tags describe their design, not yours, and a best seller’s rank comes from far more than its tags.
  • Using the same 13 tags on every listing. Similar designs can share a core, but each listing needs tags for what makes it different, or your own listings end up chasing the same searches.
  • Tagging trends that don’t fit. A trending phrase only helps if the design actually matches it.
  • Trademarks in tags. Brand names, sports teams, TV shows and characters are off-limits even when the design is original, and using them in tags alone can get a listing reported. Our print-on-demand trademark guide shows how to check a phrase.
  • Changing tags constantly. Give a change a few weeks and compare views before you decide it didn’t work.

When to update your tags

Tags aren’t set-and-forget, but they’re not something to fiddle with every day either. A simple routine:

  • After 30 to 60 days, look at listings with few or no views. Weak tags, or a weak first photo, are the usual suspects.
  • Leave winners alone. If a listing is selling, don’t rewrite its tags to chase more.
  • Rotate seasonal tags. Swap occasion tags in a few weeks before the season and swap them back out afterward.
  • Copy what works. When a phrase brings visits in your Stats, try it on related designs.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags should I use on Etsy?
All 13. Each tag is another chance to match a shopper’s search, and an empty slot is a search you can’t show up for. Each tag can be up to 20 characters, including spaces.
Should my Etsy tags match my title?
Your main phrase can appear in both, but don’t spend all 13 tags repeating the title. Use tags for the angles the title doesn’t cover: recipients, occasions, synonyms and styles.
Do I need plural or misspelled versions of my tags?
No. Etsy says its search matches singular and plural forms by their root word and redirects common misspellings, so those variants waste tag slots.
Can I use brand names in Etsy tags?
No. Brand names, sports teams, characters and trademarked phrases can get a listing removed for intellectual property infringement, even when the design itself is original, and repeated reports put your shop at risk.
How often should I change my Etsy tags?
Give a new set a few weeks before judging it, then compare views in your Stats. Rework tags on listings that get few or no views, rotate seasonal tags ahead of each season, and leave listings that sell alone.
