Here’s the short version: a good Etsy description for a print-on-demand (POD) product opens with one or two plain sentences that say what the item is and who it’s for, then lists what buyers check before they buy (fit, materials, sizing, care, personalization and shipping), with your AI disclosure if you used AI tools. Etsy says its search reads descriptions too, so the opening should include your main phrase once, naturally.

Below you’ll find a fill-in template, three complete examples (a t-shirt, a mug and a poster) and disclosure lines you can reuse. Copy the structure, then swap in your own design and your provider’s exact product details.

Key takeaways

  • Etsy’s Seller Handbook says search considers keywords in your description, and advises working them into the first few sentences.
  • Lead with what it is and who it’s for, then put the details buyers need (size, material, care) in short, scannable lines.
  • If you used AI tools to create the design, Etsy requires a disclosure in the description.
  • Etsy shows your production partner on the listing once you assign one; a line in the description is optional but sets expectations.
  • Replace your provider’s generic copy with your own opening, and keep its specs, checked line by line.

Does the Etsy description matter for search?

Yes, more than it used to. Etsy’s Seller Handbook says search “considers keywords and phrases within your listing descriptions when ranking your listings”, and describes search as taking a holistic view of each listing: title, tags, attributes, description, first photo and reviews. Its advice for descriptions, from The Anatomy of a Well-Crafted Etsy Listing, is specific:

  • Work relevant keywords into the first few sentences.
  • Don’t copy your title word for word or paste a keyword list; write a sentence or two that sounds human.
  • Put essential information near the top, such as sizes, dimensions, colors or ordering directions.
  • Use bullet points or short paragraphs rather than one long block of text.

The bigger job is still conversion. By the time a shopper reads your description, they’ve already clicked. Now they want reassurance: will it fit, what’s it made of, can I wash it, will it arrive in time. A description that answers those questions quickly turns visits into orders, and orders feed the engagement signals Etsy uses to rank you. The rest of the ranking picture is in our complete Etsy SEO guide.

The fill-in-the-blanks template

Copy this into a note, fill in the brackets and delete any section that doesn’t apply. Keep the order: buyers skim from the top, and the questions they ask first come first.

How to fill in each section

The opening (what Etsy and buyers read first)

Use this shape: the design + the product + who it’s for + why they’d want it. For example: “A retro pickleball shirt with a faded sunset and two crossed paddles, made for the friend who plays four mornings a week.” That one sentence holds the main phrase (“retro pickleball shirt”), shows the design and names the buyer. Don’t start with your shop story or the blank’s fabric blend; nobody searches for those.

Design and product details

Describe the artwork in plain words: motif, colors, style and print location. Then copy the specs from your provider’s product page for the blank and print partner you actually chose. Colors, fabrics and care notes can differ between blanks and partners, so don’t reuse specs from another listing without checking. If you want buyers to know how it’s printed, name the method; our DTG vs DTF guide explains what each means for feel and care.

Sizing and care

Say whether apparel is unisex or fitted, and point to the size chart photo. Copy care instructions from your provider rather than writing your own: a print washed the wrong way can turn into an “it faded” review.

Personalization

If buyers can add a name or date, repeat the character limit here and say you print exactly what they type. The setup of Etsy’s personalization fields is covered in our guide to personalized print-on-demand on Etsy.

Production and shipping

Say it’s made to order, give the processing time and send buyers to the delivery estimate at checkout rather than promising dates. Keep it consistent with your shipping profile; our guide to Etsy shipping profiles for POD shows how to set realistic times.

Three complete examples

Example 1: a t-shirt description

Listing title: Retro Pickleball Shirt, Sunset Paddles Graphic Tee

A retro pickleball shirt with a faded sunset and two crossed paddles, made for the friend who plays four mornings a week and still wants a fifth game. Soft, easy to wear and ready to go from the court to coffee.

ABOUT THIS DESIGN
• Vintage-style sunset stripes in mustard, coral and teal, printed on the front
• I created this design from my own idea using AI image tools, then edited and prepared it for print.

PRODUCT DETAILS
• Unisex crew neck tee with a classic fit
• Solid colors are 100% cotton; heather colors are a cotton/polyester blend
• Printed to order with direct-to-garment (DTG) ink, so the print feels soft

SIZING
• Unisex sizing. For an oversized look, size up. The size chart is in the last photo.

CARE
• Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colors
• Tumble dry low or hang dry. Don't iron directly on the print or dry clean.

PRODUCTION & SHIPPING
• Made to order by my production partner, a print shop in the US
• Takes 2-5 business days to make before it ships. Check the delivery estimate at checkout.

Example 2: a mug description

Listing title: Plant Lover Coffee Mug, Watercolor Monstera Leaves

A plant lover mug wrapped in loose watercolor monstera and pothos leaves, for the friend whose windowsill ran out of room two plants ago. A good housewarming or birthday gift for anyone who names their plants.

ABOUT THIS DESIGN
• Deep greens with terracotta accents, printed all the way around the mug
• Designed by me with the help of AI image tools.

PRODUCT DETAILS
• White ceramic mug, 11 oz (325 ml), glossy finish
• Printed to order with sublimation, so the design is part of the mug's coating

CARE
• Dishwasher and microwave safe

PRODUCTION & SHIPPING
• Made to order by my production partner in the US and shipped in protective packaging
• Buying for a date? Check the delivery estimate at checkout before you order.

Example 3: a poster description

Listing title: Minimalist Mountain Lake Poster, Sunrise Wall Art, Unframed

A minimalist mountain lake poster in soft sunrise pinks and blues, for a calm bedroom, a reading corner or a hallway that needs more than a mirror. A simple housewarming gift for anyone who'd rather be at the lake.

ABOUT THIS DESIGN
• Flat, layered mountains over a still lake at sunrise, in a small palette that suits neutral rooms
• This artwork was created with AI image tools from my own idea and refined for print.

PRODUCT DETAILS
• Printed on thick matte poster paper
• Sizes: 12 × 18 in or 24 × 36 in. Both are the same 2:3 shape, so the whole design shows at either size.
• Frame not included

CARE
• Keep out of direct sunlight, and frame behind glass or acrylic to protect it

PRODUCTION & SHIPPING
• Printed to order by my production partner and shipped rolled in a tube
• Need it by a certain date? Check the delivery estimate at checkout.

Notice what the three have in common: the main phrase appears once, in the first sentence; every spec is something a buyer might ask about; and nothing claims the item is handmade or hand-drawn. The mug skips sizing because it comes in one size, and the poster lists its sizes under product details.

Three POD products, three descriptions: the structure stays the same, only the details change.

AI disclosure and production-partner lines you can reuse

Two lines belong on most AI-assisted POD listings: the AI disclosure and a production-partner line. Adapt these, and only claim steps you actually took.

SituationLine you can adapt
You generated the design with AI and edited it“I created this design from my own idea using AI image tools, then edited and prepared it for print.”
You generated it with AI and didn’t change it“This design was created with AI image tools from my own prompt and prepared for print.”
AI made part of the design“The illustration was made with the help of AI tools; the lettering and layout are my own.”
Naming your production partner“Printed to order by my production partner, [partner name], in [country].”
Describing your partner without naming it“Made to order by my production partner, an apparel printer in the US.”
Personalized items“Your name is printed exactly as you type it, so please double-check spelling and capitals.”

How the rules fit together at the time of writing: Etsy’s Creativity Standards require you to disclose within the listing description when an item is created with AI, and to disclose that an item is made by a production partner, with accurate information about where it ships from. You make the partner disclosure by assigning the partner to the listing (Shop Manager → Settings → Partners you work with), and Etsy then shows it on the listing page under “Production partners”. So the description line is extra clarity, not a substitute. The setup is in how to add an Etsy production partner, and the AI rules are in can you sell AI-generated designs on Etsy.

Descriptions written for every design, disclosures included

POD Made Easy writes a buyer-first description, a title under 140 characters and 13 tags for each design, and adds Etsy’s AI-disclosure and production-partner wording automatically, so you don’t have to remember them on every listing.

Description mistakes that cost POD sellers sales

  • Opening with the blank’s marketing copy. A paragraph about a sweatshirt’s fabric blend is a common POD opening on Etsy, and it tells a shopper nothing about your design.
  • Keyword lists. “Nurse shirt, nurse gift, nurse tee, RN shirt…” reads like spam. Etsy specifically advises against listing your top keywords; use tags for variations.
  • Guessed specs. Mixing up a 100% cotton tee with a blend, or claiming a mug is dishwasher safe when your provider says hand wash, turns into returns and reviews.
  • Promises you can’t keep. “Ships tomorrow” when your provider needs three days. Let Etsy’s checkout estimate do the promising.
  • Untrue “how it’s made” claims. “Hand-drawn” or “handmade” on an AI-assisted, partner-printed design misstates how the item was produced.
  • No sizing help. Missing size guidance on apparel is an invitation for wrong-size orders and three-star reviews.
  • Brand comparisons. Describing your style with a brand, franchise or character name puts the listing at risk even when the design itself is original.

If your listings get views but few orders, the description is one of the first places to look; our list of fixes for Etsy views with no sales covers the others.

A 60-second check before you publish

  • The first sentence says what it is, who it’s for and what the design shows, with the main phrase once.
  • Every spec matches your provider’s page for this product and print partner.
  • Apparel listings say how to choose a size and where the chart is.
  • Care instructions are copied from your provider.
  • Personalization limits match the character limit in your personalization field.
  • There’s an AI disclosure if you used AI tools to create the design.
  • Your production partner is assigned in the listing.
  • No brand, franchise or character names anywhere.
  • It reads cleanly on a phone: short lines, no wall of text.

Your description works alongside a short title and 13 tags; see how to write Etsy titles that rank and how to choose all 13 Etsy tags. If you’d rather draft with AI, these ChatGPT prompts for Etsy listings follow the same template and tell the model not to invent specs.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an Etsy description be?
Long enough to answer a buyer’s questions and no longer. For most POD products that’s a one- or two-sentence opening plus short sections for the design, product details, sizing, care and shipping. Put the essentials at the top, because many shoppers read on a phone.
Can I copy my print provider’s product description?
Use its specs, but don’t paste its marketing paragraph as your opening. Rewrite the first lines around your design and your buyer, then copy materials, sizing and care exactly as your provider lists them for the print partner you chose.
Do I have to name my production partner in the description?
Etsy requires you to disclose production partners, which you do by assigning one to the listing; Etsy then shows it on the listing page. A line in the description is optional, but it helps buyers understand where the item ships from.
Where should the AI disclosure go in an Etsy description?
Etsy requires it within the listing description but doesn’t set a position. Near the top, or in a consistent “About this design” section, is where buyers are most likely to see it. One plain sentence is enough.
Should every Etsy listing have a unique description?
The opening should be unique to each design and buyer. The product details, care and shipping sections can repeat across listings of the same product, as long as they match the exact blank and print partner you used.
