ChatGPT Prompts for Etsy Listings: Titles, Tags, Descriptions
Copy-paste ChatGPT prompts for Etsy listings: short titles, 13 tags within 20 characters, descriptions and alt text, plus the fixes AI-written copy needs.
By the POD Made Easy team · September 24, 2026 · 10 min read

ChatGPT can draft an Etsy title, 13 tags and a description in under a minute, if you give it the facts and the rules. The prompts below do both: each starts from a short listing brief (the product, the design, the buyer and the keywords you researched), states Etsy’s limits, and asks for output you can check fast. Then you check it, because ChatGPT miscounts characters, invents product details and drifts into generic copy.
These prompts work in ChatGPT and in other AI chat tools. Copy them, replace the brackets, and run the 10-point check at the end before anything goes live on your print-on-demand (POD) listings.
Key takeaways
- Give ChatGPT facts, not vibes: a listing brief with provider specs, the design, the buyer and your researched keywords.
- State Etsy’s limits in every prompt: titles up to 140 characters (aim for under 15 words), 13 tags of 20 characters or fewer.
- Always count characters yourself or with a checker; language models are unreliable at it.
- Delete invented details: materials, sizes, care and shipping must come from your provider, not the model.
- Etsy’s AI disclosure rule is about designs created with AI, not about AI helping you write the listing text.
Start with a listing brief (prompt 0)
Weak AI listings usually start with thin prompts. “Write an Etsy listing for my cat shirt” gives the model nothing true to work with, so it fills the gaps with guesses. Paste a brief like this at the start of a new chat, and every prompt after it gets better:
LISTING BRIEF Product: [e.g. unisex crewneck sweatshirt] Provider specs: [paste fabric, fit, print method and care from your provider's product page] Design: [what the artwork shows, colors, style, where it's printed] Printed words: [exact text on the design, or "none"] Who it's for: [buyer or recipient, e.g. grandmas who garden] Occasions it suits: [e.g. Mother's Day, birthday] Personalization: [what buyers can change and the limits, or "none"] Keywords from my research: [core phrase first, then 10-15 related phrases] Words to avoid: [brand names, "handmade", anything untrue] Shop voice: [e.g. warm, plain English, light humor]
Get the keywords from real research first; our Etsy keyword research guide shows how to do it free. ChatGPT can suggest phrases, but it can’t see what Etsy shoppers search, so its ideas stay guesses until you check them. If you save the brief as a template (or in a ChatGPT project), each new listing takes a minute to set up.
Prompt 1: A short, buyer-first title
Using the listing brief above, write 5 Etsy title options. Rules: - Start with what the item is, in the words a buyer would type (my core keyword). - Add the one or two traits that make this design different: style, motif or color. - Under 15 words and under 90 characters. Etsy's hard limit is 140. - No repeated words, no ALL CAPS, no "perfect", "cute" or "best". - No gift phrases or occasions unless the design is made for that occasion. - No brand, character or celebrity names. After each option, show the character count in brackets.
These rules mirror Etsy’s own title guidance: clearly state the item, put key traits first, consider fewer than 15 words, and move subjective words and nonessential gift phrases elsewhere. Asking for five options gives you a choice; asking for counts gives you something to check, and the counts will often be wrong. A good result looks like “Gardening Grandma Sweatshirt, Watercolor Seed Packet Crewneck” (61 characters). More on titles in how to write Etsy titles that rank.
Prompt 2: 13 tags that fit in 20 characters
Using the listing brief and the title I chose ("[paste title]"), write 13 Etsy tags.
Rules:
- Each tag is a multi-word phrase a shopper would type, 20 characters or fewer INCLUDING spaces.
- Letters, numbers and spaces only.
- Cover different angles: what it is (3), who it's for (2), occasions (2), style and motif (2), synonyms (2), product details (2).
- Don't repeat the title word for word, don't add plurals of another tag, and don't repeat my category: [e.g. sweatshirts].
- Only phrases that are true for this design.
Return a table: tag | character count | angle.
Then list any tag you're not sure fits in 20 characters. The counting problem is real. Language models read text in chunks called tokens, not letter by letter, so they often produce a 22-character tag and label it 19. Etsy caps tags at 20 characters, so check the whole list before publishing: paste it into our free checker, or into a spreadsheet with =LEN(A1) beside each tag. The angle split comes from our 13-tag formula.
Etsy title & tag checkerPaste ChatGPT’s title and tags to catch anything over the limits, duplicates, single words and empty slots.Prompt 3: A description that sounds like you
Using the listing brief, write an Etsy description. Structure: 1. Opening: 1-2 sentences saying what it is, who it's for and what the design shows. Use my core keyword once, naturally. 2. ABOUT THIS DESIGN: 1-2 bullets on the artwork. 3. PRODUCT DETAILS: bullets using ONLY the provider specs I gave you. Do not add materials, measurements or features that aren't in the brief. 4. SIZING: one bullet pointing to the size chart photo. 5. CARE: copy the care instructions from the brief. 6. PERSONALIZATION: only if the brief includes it, with the limits. 7. PRODUCTION & SHIPPING: "Made to order by my production partner" plus this processing time: [processing time]. Voice: [shop voice]. Write to the buyer, not about my shop. No sales clichés like "premium quality" or "must-have", and no exclamation marks. If anything a section needs is missing from the brief, write [MISSING] instead of guessing.
Two instructions do the heavy lifting: “use ONLY the provider specs” and “write [MISSING] instead of guessing”. Without them, models confidently add details like “100% organic cotton” or “dishwasher safe” that may not be true for your blank. The finished structure, with three complete examples, is in our Etsy description template.
If you created the design with AI tools, ask for the disclosure line separately so it’s never forgotten:
Write one plain sentence for my Etsy description disclosing that this design was created with AI image tools from my own idea [add "and edited by me" only if true]. No apology, no hype, under 25 words.
Prompt 4: Alt text for your listing photos
If your shop language is English, Etsy lets you add alt text to each listing photo: a short description for blind and low-vision shoppers that search engines can read too. Etsy’s alt text guidance says to keep it concise, up to 250 characters, and notes that repeating your title, tags or shop name in alt text adds no extra SEO benefit. If you leave it blank, Etsy may add AI-generated alt text for you.
Write alt text for each of my Etsy listing photos. Describe what is visible, as if to someone who can't see the image: the product, color, design and setting. Don't stuff keywords, don't repeat my title, and keep each under 250 characters. Photo 1: [e.g. flat lay of the sage green sweatshirt, front design] Photo 2: [e.g. model wearing it outdoors] Photo 3: [e.g. close-up of the print] Photo 4: [e.g. all color options side by side] Photo 5: [size chart: paste the measurements]
For the size chart, give the model the actual measurements so the alt text contains them. Etsy suggests describing size charts in detail, or putting the chart in your description as well. Photo order and content are covered in Etsy mockups that sell.
Prompt 5: Buyer questions and personalization instructions
Two smaller jobs ChatGPT handles well, as long as it only uses facts you supply:
Write 6 short answers for my Etsy shop's FAQ section about: sizing, how long production and delivery take, spelling for personalized items, what happens if an item arrives misprinted, gift notes, and care. Use only these facts: [paste your shop policies, processing times and provider notes]. Two sentences max per answer.
Write the title and instructions for an Etsy personalization field on this listing. Buyers enter [e.g. up to 6 grandkids' names, separated by commas]. Title: under 30 characters. Instructions: under 120 characters, including the character limit and one example entry.
Etsy limits each personalization field’s instructions to 120 characters, so the second prompt keeps it short. The rest of the personalization setup is in our guide to personalized print-on-demand on Etsy.
Prompt 6: Rewrite an old keyword-stuffed listing
Here is an old Etsy title and its 13 tags: [paste]. Rewrite the title to follow Etsy's current guidance: what the item is first, the key traits, under 15 words, no repeated words. Then list every phrase you removed from the title and say which ones should become tags. Keep 13 tags of 20 characters or fewer.
This is the quickest way to apply Etsy’s newer title guidance without losing the phrases your old title was matching. Test it on five to ten listings, compare views and orders after a few weeks, and only then roll it out across your shop.

Where ChatGPT goes wrong on Etsy listings, and the fix
| Problem | What it looks like | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Miscounted characters | A 22-character tag labeled “19 characters” | Check every tag and title with a counter before publishing |
| Invented details | “100% organic cotton”, “dishwasher safe”, “ships in 1 day” | Put provider specs in the brief and ask for [MISSING] instead of guesses |
| Keyword stuffing | The same phrase in four forms, or a list of keywords posing as a sentence | Ask for one natural use of the core phrase; move variations to tags |
| Generic voice | “Stunning”, “must-have”, “perfect for any occasion”, exclamation marks | Give it your shop voice and a paragraph you wrote yourself as a sample |
| Writing about the seller | “Our premium products are crafted with love” | Tell it to write to the buyer: who it’s for and why they’d want it |
| Trademarks | Brand, franchise or celebrity names in tags “because people search them” | List banned words in the brief and search any phrase you’re unsure of |
| Same output everywhere | Twenty listings with near-identical openings | Change the design and buyer lines in the brief for each listing |
| Untrue “how it’s made” claims | “Hand-drawn”, “handmade”, “hand-painted” | Say how it was actually made, and disclose AI where you used it |
The trademark row deserves extra care, because the model will happily suggest popular brand and character names as tags. Even when your design is original, those names can get a listing removed. Our trademark guide for POD sellers shows how to check a phrase in a few minutes.
Do you have to disclose that ChatGPT wrote your listing?
At the time of writing, Etsy’s AI disclosure rule is about how the item was created. Its Creativity Standards cover “seller-prompted AI creations”, such as artwork generated with AI tools from your prompts, and require you to disclose AI use in the listing description for those items. Using a chatbot to draft your title or description isn’t what that rule addresses, and Etsy itself now offers an optional AI tool that suggests listing titles.
Two things still apply. You’re responsible for everything the listing says, so every claim has to be accurate. And if the design was made with AI tools, the disclosure is required whoever wrote the text. Our guide to selling AI designs on Etsy has sample wording.
Skip the prompt, paste and recount loop
POD Made Easy writes the title (under 140 characters), 13 tags (each within Etsy’s 20-character limit) and a buyer-first description from your design, adds the AI-disclosure and production-partner lines, and creates the product in your Printify shop, ready to publish to Etsy.
Start your free trialA 10-point check before AI-written copy goes live
- The title starts with what the item is and stays under about 15 words.
- Every tag is 20 characters or fewer, counted by a tool, not by the model.
- No tag repeats another tag or your category.
- Every product detail matches your provider’s page for this exact product and print partner.
- Nothing says “handmade” or “hand-drawn” unless it’s true.
- The AI disclosure is there if the design was made with AI tools.
- Your production partner is assigned in the listing.
- No brand, franchise, character or celebrity names anywhere.
- The opening names who it’s for.
- It reads like your shop, not like every other shop.
Copy is only one part of ranking. Once your text passes the check, run through the rest of our Etsy SEO checklist: photos, attributes, shipping price and reviews matter just as much.
Frequently asked questions
- Can ChatGPT do Etsy SEO for me?
- It can draft titles, tags and descriptions quickly, but it can’t see what Etsy shoppers search or how your listings perform. Use Etsy’s Marketplace Insights and your Stats for the keywords, then let ChatGPT do the writing and check its work.
- Is using ChatGPT for Etsy listings against the rules?
- Not at the time of writing. Etsy’s AI rules focus on disclosing items created with AI, and Etsy offers its own AI title suggestions. You’re still responsible for every claim in the listing, so check details against your provider’s specs.
- Why does ChatGPT give me Etsy tags longer than 20 characters?
- Language models process text in chunks called tokens rather than letter by letter, so they’re unreliable at counting characters, even when they print a count. Run every tag through a character counter or a spreadsheet LEN formula before publishing.
- Is Etsy’s own AI title tool better than ChatGPT?
- It does one job: suggesting titles from your current title, first photo and description, following Etsy’s guidance, for eligible English listings. ChatGPT is more flexible and can handle tags and descriptions too. Review suggestions from either before you publish.
- Should I ask ChatGPT to rewrite a best seller’s listing?
- No. Another shop’s title, tags and description describe their item, not yours, and copying distinctive text or designs can be infringement. Give the model your own design details and keyword research instead.
