Getting more reviews on Etsy comes down to a few habits: deliver what the listing promised, on time; send one friendly check-in message a few days after delivery that makes leaving a review easy; and never offer a discount, freebie or refund in exchange for a positive review. Etsy prohibits that, and in the US it can break federal rules too.

For print-on-demand sellers, most of the work happens before the order ships, because the print partner, the file and the delivery estimate decide whether a review is worth asking for. This guide covers what Etsy allows, message templates you can copy, packaging inserts through Printify and Printful, the quality checks that prevent one-star reviews and how to respond when one arrives anyway.

Key takeaways

  • Asking for a review is allowed. Offering anything in exchange for a positive review is not, and in the US the FTC’s review rule bans incentives tied to a review’s sentiment.
  • Buyers can review for 100 days from the delivery date (or estimated delivery date), so ask a few days after delivery, not before.
  • Your rating is now a recency-weighted average of all your reviews, and keeping a positive review score is part of the customer service standards that affect search visibility.
  • Most one-star POD reviews trace back to fixable causes: soft prints, misleading mockups, sizing confusion and late delivery.
  • Solve problems privately first. Once you respond publicly, the buyer can no longer edit their review.

Why Etsy reviews matter for POD shops

Reviews do three jobs at once. They reassure shoppers who have never heard of your shop, they feed Etsy’s view of your customer service, and they tell you what to fix.

  • Conversion. A listing with a few genuine reviews, ideally with buyer photos, answers the question every new shopper has: will this look like the picture?
  • Search visibility. Etsy’s customer service standards include maintaining a positive review score, alongside replying to messages, shipping on time with tracking and avoiding a high number of cases. Etsy says consistently missing these standards may affect your search visibility. Our explainer on how the Etsy algorithm works covers the other factors.
  • Star Seller. The badge needs an average rating of 4.8 or higher, replies to 95% of first messages within 24 hours, and 95% of orders shipped on time with tracking. You’re eligible 90 days after your first sale, with at least 5 orders and $300 in sales over the past three months. Etsy says the badge doesn’t directly affect search ranking, but it makes Star Sellers easier for buyers to spot.

One 2026 change is worth knowing. Etsy’s review score is now a recency-weighted average of every rating you’ve received: reviews from the past 12 months count most, and each older rating’s weight halves every year. A bad month fades over time, and a steady stream of good recent reviews matters more than ever. Buyers can also rate item quality, shipping and customer service separately, so a slow delivery can dent a review of a product they love.

What Etsy allows, and what gets shops in trouble

Etsy wants reviews to reflect real experiences. Asking is fine; buying, trading or pressuring is not.

AllowedNot allowed
A polite message after delivery inviting an honest reviewOffering a discount, free item, extra product or refund in exchange for a positive review
A thank-you card in the package with a QR code to the buyer’s Etsy purchasesA card promising a discount on the next order for a five-star review
A thank-you offer that goes to buyers whether or not they reviewAsking friends or family to buy just so they can leave a review
Fixing a problem and mentioning that buyers can update a review if they wishMaking a refund or replacement conditional on changing or removing a review
One calm public response to a reviewReview swaps with other sellers, or buying from your own shop through another account

Based on Etsy’s Seller Policy and its Shilling and Extortion policies at the time of writing.

Etsy’s extortion policy specifically prohibits a seller offering a buyer goods, services or compensation in exchange for a positive review. Its shilling rules allow honest reviews from friends and family, but only for genuine purchases on Etsy, where the review isn’t the purpose of the transaction and nobody shares a financial interest in the shop. Etsy also scans messages for review manipulation.

US law points the same way. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, bans compensation or incentives conditioned on a review expressing a particular sentiment; the FTC’s questions and answers on the rule have the details.

When to ask: timing a review request for POD orders

Ask too early and the buyer hasn’t opened the parcel; ask too late and they’ve forgotten you. For POD, the right moment is a few days after delivery. A typical Printify order looks like this:

StageTypical timingWhat you do
Order placedDay 0Check any personalization or buyer note
Sent to productionDay 1, with Printify’s default 24-hour approval windowFix address or personalization issues before this point
Produced and shippedMost Printify orders ship within 2–7 business days of being submittedTracking syncs to Etsy and the buyer is notified
DeliveredDepends on the carrier and distanceNothing yet
Check-in2–4 days after deliverySend the delivery check-in message below

Printify’s stated production range at the time of writing. Your print partner, product and season will change the timing.

Buyers can leave a review from the delivery date (or the estimated delivery date, if there’s no tracking) for up to 100 days. They can’t review while a case is open, and they can edit their review as often as they like within the window, unless you’ve responded publicly.

Copy-and-paste review request templates

Save these as quick replies in Etsy Messages (Etsy suggests quick replies for exactly this kind of post-purchase request), then personalize the first line each time. Keep them short, and never mention stars or ratings.

Delivery check-in (your main review request)

Hi [first name], your [product] should have arrived by now, and I hope it’s just what you pictured! If anything isn’t right, reply here and I’ll sort it out. And if you’re happy with it, an honest review on Etsy helps a small shop like mine more than you’d think. You can leave one from your Purchases page. Thank you for supporting independent design!

Gift orders

Hi [first name], I saw this was a gift, so I hope it went down well! If the recipient has any sizing or care questions, I’m happy to help. When you have a moment, an honest review on Etsy would mean a lot. Thanks again for choosing my shop.

Delay notice (send before the buyer has to ask)

Hi [first name], a quick heads-up: my print partner is running a little behind, so your order is now expected around [date]. I’m keeping an eye on it and will message you as soon as it ships. Sorry for the wait, and thank you for your patience.

Problem reported (misprint or damage)

Hi [first name], I’m so sorry, that isn’t the quality I promise. Could you send a photo of the problem, including the label inside? As soon as I have it, I’ll arrange a replacement at no cost to you, or a full refund if you’d prefer.

Notice what the fix message doesn’t say: nothing about reviews. Solve the problem first. Some buyers update their review on their own once they’re happy; if they ask, you can tell them they’re able to edit it within the review window, but never make the fix depend on it. The photo also matters for you, because providers usually need one to approve a reprint.

Packaging inserts: can POD sellers include a thank-you card?

Yes, within limits. A physical card is one of the friendliest ways to invite a review, and both of the biggest providers now offer a version of it:

  • Printify packaging inserts. A 6 × 4 inch single-sided card you design in Printify, printed on demand and added to orders from print partners that support it. At the time of writing it costs $0.25 per insert on the free plan or $0.15 with Premium (plus tax). Orders with inserts are routed only to supporting partners, and inserts aren’t available with Express Delivery. See Printify’s packaging insert details.
  • Printful packing slips and pack-ins. Printful lets you add a custom message and logo to packing slips, and it can add pack-ins you supply, such as cards or stickers, at facilities that store branding items. Pack-ins aren’t available for some products, including mugs, wall art and stickers.

On the illustrative $24.99 tee that earns about $8.62, a $0.25 Printify insert costs about 3% of your profit per order. Here’s card wording that stays inside the rules:

Thank you for supporting a small shop! If your new [product] makes you smile, an honest review on Etsy helps other people find us. Scan the code to go straight to your Etsy purchases.

Point the QR code at etsy.com/your/purchases, where buyers leave reviews. Don’t print a discount that depends on a review, and check the design against Etsy’s rules before hundreds of copies go out.

Prevent bad reviews before the order ships

The best review request can’t rescue a disappointing product. These are the usual causes of one-star POD reviews, and how to prevent each:

What buyers complain aboutUsual causePrevention
Blurry or pixelated printA low-resolution file stretched to fill the print areaUpload at the exact print-area size, around 300 DPI
A white box or halo around the designSemi-transparent edge pixels or a background that isn’t transparentA clean transparent PNG, checked on a dark background
A typo in the designAI-generated or rushed textProofread every word, letter by letter, before publishing
“The color looks nothing like the photo”Over-edited or unrealistic mockupsMockups in the real garment color, plus samples of your best sellers
Wrong sizeUnisex fit not explainedA size chart photo and a fit note in the description
Arrived lateProcessing times shorter than real productionProcessing times that match your print partner, plus a buffer in the holidays

Common causes, not an exhaustive list.

Halos are the sneakiest of these, because they’re invisible on a white screen; our guide to transparent PNGs for t-shirts shows how to catch them. Choosing the right print partner matters as much as the file, and our guide to choosing a Printify print provider covers what to compare. For delivery promises, our guide to Etsy shipping profiles for POD helps you set processing times you can keep, and our mockup checklist keeps your photos honest.

Stop one-star reviews at the file stage

POD Made Easy checks every final design for resolution and clean transparency, and a vision model spell-checks any AI-rendered text before it can be published, so blurry prints, halos and typos don’t reach your buyers.

How to handle a negative Etsy review

  1. Don’t reply publicly yet. Once you post a public response, the buyer can no longer edit their review, even if you later delete your response. Give a private fix a chance first.
  2. Message the buyer privately. From Shop Manager → Orders, message them about that order, ask what went wrong and offer a fix. For misprints and damage, providers generally reprint or refund when you report the problem quickly with photos; our guide to POD returns and misprints explains who pays for what.
  3. Fix it without conditions. Replace or refund, then leave it there. Buyers can edit their review within the 100-day window if their view changes.
  4. If you can’t resolve it, respond once, publicly. You have 100 days from the buyer’s last edit. Write for future shoppers rather than the reviewer: short, factual, polite and focused on what you did or changed. Leave out tracking numbers, links and private details.
  5. Report it only if it breaks Etsy’s rules. Etsy removes reviews that contain private information, harassment or obscene language, spam, shilling or threats, or that are only about things outside your control, such as a carrier mentioned by name. It won’t remove a compliant review because you disagree with it.

A public response that reassures future buyers might read:

We’re sorry this print didn’t meet expectations. We reached out the same day to offer a free replacement, and we’ve since moved this design to a different print partner. We’d love the chance to make it right.

Etsy’s own guidance on negative reviews lists everything that qualifies for removal.

A 10-minute weekly review routine

For a side-hustle shop, reviews work best as a small weekly habit rather than an afterthought:

  1. Check Orders for anything delivered in the last week and send your saved check-in message.
  2. Read every new review, good and bad, and note any repeated comment about fit, color or delivery.
  3. Trace each problem to its source: a print partner, a file, a mockup or a processing time.
  4. Fix the root cause once, rather than apologizing for it every week.
  5. Share your best reviews. The Etsy Seller app can share a review with a trackable Share & Save link, so one happy buyer’s words can bring in the next.

Your first reviews are the hardest to earn. If you’re still waiting for your first order, start with our 30-day first-sale plan. If you have traffic but few orders, our guide to Etsy views with no sales will help you find the leak.

Frequently asked questions

Is it against Etsy rules to ask for a review?
No. Asking politely is fine, and Etsy even suggests saving a quick reply for post-purchase review requests. Just don’t offer anything in exchange for a positive review, ask for a specific star rating or pressure buyers with repeated messages.
Can I offer a discount for a review on Etsy?
It’s best not to. Etsy prohibits compensation in exchange for positive reviews, and the FTC’s US rule bans incentives tied to a review’s sentiment. Keep coupons, such as Etsy’s thank-you offer, separate from review requests.
Can Etsy remove a negative review?
Only if it breaks Etsy’s policies, for example by including private information, harassment, spam or shilling, or by being only about something outside your control, such as a carrier named in the review. Etsy Support can’t remove a review just because a seller disagrees with it.
How long does a buyer have to leave an Etsy review?
100 days, starting from the delivery date shown by tracking, or from the estimated delivery date if there’s no tracking. Buyers can edit their review within that window unless the seller has posted a public response.
Do Etsy reviews affect search ranking?
Indirectly, yes. Keeping a positive review score is one of Etsy’s customer service standards, and consistently missing those standards can lower your visibility in search. According to Etsy, the Star Seller badge itself doesn’t directly affect ranking.
