Print-on-demand mugs are one of the easiest products to start with: one flat print file, no sizes to guess and a gift-ready item buyers understand at a glance. The catch is shipping. A ceramic mug is heavy, so postage can cost more than the mug itself: at the time of writing, Printify’s main 11 oz ceramic mug costs about $5.03 to make from Printify Choice, and standard shipping to a US buyer adds $7.29.

Here’s one 11 oz white ceramic mug sold on Etsy to a US buyer with free shipping built into the price. Costs are Printify Choice’s at the time of writing, without a Premium plan; fees are Etsy’s standard US rates.

Two things matter more than anything else here. First, shipping is the biggest single cost, so a $14.99 mug is a losing mug once postage lands. Second, every extra dollar of price is nearly a dollar of profit, because your costs are fixed. That’s why mugs reward designs specific enough to justify $20–$25, rather than racing the cheapest listings.

Two levers can improve the numbers. Printify Premium lowered the same mug to about $3.75 at the time of writing, which is worth $1.28 per mug once you sell enough to cover the plan. Economy shipping ($5.79, 4–8 business days against 2–5 for standard) saves $1.50 but makes delivery slower. The 15 oz size costs about $6.13 plus $9.39 shipping, so price it a few dollars higher: at $24.99 it keeps about $6.65, and at $26.99 about $8.46.

Why two mugs in one order change the math

Most Printify products qualify for a cheaper “additional item” shipping rate when several items of the same type come from the same print partner in one order, as its shipping guide explains. It also warns that some partners don’t offer the reduced rate on bulky items like mugs, so check the partner you pick. So design with pairs in mind: matching “his and hers” style mugs, a set for two friends, or a mug that pairs with another design in the same collection. Mention the pairing in the description and show the two together in one photo. Items from different partners, or different product types, ship separately at full rates, so a mug plus a tee doesn’t get this saving.

There’s no reliable public sales data by design. What we can say is that mugs are a classic gift, so plan for a buyer who may not be the person drinking from it. That shapes what works:

• Make the recipient obvious. A mug for “a nurse who works nights” or “a new grandma” sells itself to the giver. Generic coffee jokes compete in a crowded field of near-identical listings.
• Keep text short and big. Mugs are read at arm’s length on a 3.5-inch-tall band. Two or three short lines beat a paragraph.
• Use both sides. Text-led designs printed on both sides read whichever hand holds the mug.
• Illustrated wraps work too. Botanicals, birds, landscapes and patterns look good all the way around and suit buyers who want something less jokey.

Buyers can’t hold the mug, so your photos and description have to answer their questions:

• Both sides and the handle. Show the mug with the handle on the left and on the right, so buyers see exactly what prints where.
• Scale. An 11 oz next to a 15 oz, or the mug in a hand, answers “how big is it?” before anyone asks.
• A close-up of the text, so buyers can read it at thumbnail size.

• Price 15 oz higher. It costs about $3.20 more to make and ship, so a $3–$5 step between sizes protects your margin.
• Plan for Offsite Ads. At $17.99 a 15% Offsite Ads fee leaves under a dollar. If you can’t price above about $20, decide deliberately whether to stay opted in.

Quality checks before you scale
