If you sell print-on-demand on Etsy, your provider decides three things your customers notice (print quality, delivery time and price) and one thing they never see: your margin. Printify, Printful and Gelato all connect to Etsy, create listings for you and route orders automatically, but they’re built on very different business models, and that difference shapes almost everything else.

The short version: Printify is usually the cheapest with the widest catalog, Printful is the most consistent and best for branding, and Gelato is strongest when many of your buyers live outside the US. If you’re a new or small shop watching every dollar, that usually means starting on Printify’s free plan.

This comparison covers how each one works, what the paid plans cost at the time of writing, catalog breadth, how Etsy orders flow, quality consistency and international shipping, then ends with a simple way to choose. Prices and plans change often, so treat the numbers as a September 2026 snapshot and check each provider’s pricing page before you commit.

Key takeaways

  • Printify is a marketplace of independent print partners: usually the lowest base costs and the widest catalog, with quality that depends on the partner you pick.
  • Printful produces orders in its own facilities: higher base costs, but more consistent quality and stronger branding options.
  • Gelato routes each order to a local production partner (32 countries at the time of writing), which suits shops with many international buyers.
  • Paid plans only pay off at volume. Printify Premium is $39/mo or $24.99/mo billed yearly, Printful Growth is $24.99/mo, and Gelato’s plan pricing varies.
  • You don’t have to pick just one. Pairing a low-cost provider with a second one for premium or international products is a practical setup.

Printify, Printful or Gelato: quick picks

In a little more detail, start with:

  • Printify if you’re starting out, care most about cost and want the biggest choice of products and print partners.
  • Printful if you sell at premium prices, want the most predictable quality and care about branded touches like custom inside labels and pack-in inserts.
  • Gelato if a large share of your buyers live outside the US, or if wall art and other printed paper products are central to your shop.

The rest of this guide explains the trade-offs, so you can decide based on your own shop rather than someone else’s.

Three different business models

On the surface the three look alike: you upload a design, pick products, publish to Etsy and they handle production. Underneath, they work in very different ways.

Printify is a marketplace. It doesn’t print anything itself. Each product in its catalog is offered by one or more independent print partners, and you choose which partner makes your version. Two partners can sell the same blank tee at different prices, with different production times, locations and track records. That choice is Printify’s biggest strength, because you can optimize each product for cost or speed, and its biggest risk, because quality depends on the partner you choose.

Printful runs its own facilities. Printful produces orders in facilities it operates, with its own staff, equipment and quality checks. You don’t pick a partner; Printful decides where each order is made. Base prices are generally higher than the cheapest Printify partners, but you get one consistent standard plus branding options such as custom inside labels and pack-ins.

Gelato is a local production network. Gelato works with production partners in 32 countries and sends each order to a partner near the buyer. A poster ordered by a buyer in Germany can be printed in Europe, and the same poster ordered from Australia can be printed closer to Australia, as long as a local partner offers that product. The goal is shorter shipping distances, which helps delivery times and shipping costs on international orders.

Pricing and paid plans (at the time of writing)

All three let you start free: you pay for each product only when a customer orders it. The paid plans are optional memberships that lower your product costs or add features, so the real question is whether you’ll sell enough for the discount to beat the monthly fee.

  • Printify Premium costs $39 a month, or $24.99 a month billed yearly, and gives up to 20% off products.
  • Printful Growth costs $24.99 a month and adds product discounts and extra features. Check Printful’s pricing page for what’s currently included.
  • Gelato+ adds discounts and extras on top of Gelato’s free plan, which allows up to two connected stores. Gelato’s plan pricing varies, so check its pricing page for the current numbers rather than relying on any figure you read in a blog post, including this one.

The simplest way to decide is to work out your break-even point. Say Premium saves you about $1.50 on each tee (an illustrative figure; your saving depends on the product and partner). At $24.99 a month billed yearly, you need roughly 17 tee sales a month before Premium pays for itself. Below that, stay on the free plan and spend the money on samples instead. Our Printify Premium break-even guide runs the numbers for other products.

Catalog breadth

Printify has the widest catalog of the three because it pulls together many partners: apparel from basic to premium blanks, mugs and drinkware, stickers, posters, home decor, accessories and seasonal items. Many products are offered by several partners, so you can often find the same item at different prices or in different production locations.

Printful listed 562 products when we checked in September 2026. The range is smaller but made to one standard, and its built-in Design Maker helps with simple text and graphic designs without leaving the dashboard.

Gelato covers the core POD categories, including apparel, mugs, wall art, cards and calendars, and it’s especially strong in wall art such as posters and framed prints. It’s a good fit if prints are a big part of your shop. If you sell premium wall art from the UK, Prodigi, a UK-based print specialist, is worth comparing too (see our Prodigi review).

For most Etsy sellers, the basics matter more than catalog size. A good tee, a sweatshirt, a hoodie, a mug, stickers and posters cover what most new shops list first. All three offer those; the differences are price, quality and where each item is made.

Etsy integration and order routing

All three connect to Etsy through official integrations, create listings in your shop and import orders automatically. The details differ in ways that start to matter once you have dozens of listings.

Printify. You connect Etsy under Manage stores, create a product and click publish. Printify creates the Etsy listing with your mockups, variants and prices. When an order comes in, it’s imported into Printify and charged to your Printify billing. You choose when orders go into production: manually, after 1 hour, after 24 hours (the default) or once a day. That delay gives you a window to fix an address or cancel before printing starts.

Two Printify habits prevent headaches. First, make edits in Printify rather than on Etsy: changing the title, description or SKU on Etsy, or duplicating a synced listing, can break the link between the listing and the product. Second, don’t leave products sitting untouched: since September 2025, Printify removes products with no orders and no edits for over a year. Published listings stay live on Etsy, but they lose their link to Printify. Our guide on how to connect Printify to Etsy covers setup and sync problems.

Printful. Printful can push new products to Etsy, or link its products to listings you’ve already created on Etsy, and then imports orders for those listings automatically. That makes it a good fit if you like to build listings on Etsy first and connect fulfillment afterward.

Gelato. You create products in Gelato’s dashboard, choosing variants, mockups and prices, then publish them to your Etsy shop. Orders are imported and routed to a production partner near the buyer.

If you plan to sell beyond Etsy, check channel coverage as well. At the time of writing, Printify publishes to 11 sales channels, including Shopify, WooCommerce, eBay US, TikTok Shop US and Amazon US. Gelato connects to Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, TikTok Shop, Wix, Squarespace and BigCommerce, with Amazon in beta. Printful also integrates with Shopify, WooCommerce and other major platforms.

Print quality and consistency

Quality problems cost more than they seem. A blurry print or an off-center design can mean a refund, a one-star review and a buyer who never comes back.

Printify quality is as good as the partner you choose. Strong partners produce excellent results; weaker ones produce inconsistent prints. Protect yourself by picking partners with a solid track record for each product, ordering samples, and keeping each product line with one partner so repeat buyers get the same result every time. Our guide to choosing a Printify print provider has a comparison worksheet.

Printful’s in-house production is its main selling point. Because it controls the process, results tend to be more consistent from order to order, which is why some sellers use it for premium lines even when their basics run through Printify.

Gelato’s partners are spread across many countries, so quality can vary by location. If most of your buyers are in two or three countries, get samples delivered to those countries if you can.

Whichever provider you use, the file you upload matters as much as the printer. Upload artwork at the exact print-area size with a clean transparent background. Printify lists each print area in pixels rather than DPI, so export at exactly that size; Printful’s print-file guidelines give both pixels and DPI. As a rule of thumb, 300 DPI is the target: a 12 × 16 inch print area needs 3600 × 4800 pixels.

Free print DPI checkerCheck how large your design can print sharply before you upload it to any provider.

Shipping and international buyers

Shipping is where the three business models show most clearly:

  • Printify: each product ships from the partner you chose. Pick a partner close to your main market (Printify has partners in several regions, including the US and Europe). International orders usually ship from that same partner, so delivery abroad can be slower and more expensive.
  • Printful: Printful operates facilities in several countries and aims to fulfill each order from one near the customer when the product is available there.
  • Gelato: local production is the whole point. Orders are printed close to the buyer wherever a local partner offers the product, which shortens delivery distances for international orders.

On Etsy, set your processing and delivery times to match your provider’s production time plus transit time, and keep them honest: a late delivery hurts your reviews more than a slightly longer estimate. Many POD sellers build shipping into the item price and offer free shipping, partly because Etsy’s US search has historically favored listings with free shipping.

A starting point, not a rule. Order samples before you commit a product line to any provider.

You don’t have to choose one forever. A practical setup is Printify for low-cost apparel and mugs, plus Gelato or Printful for products where consistency or local production matters more than price. Each provider connects to your Etsy shop separately and manages its own listings, so they can run side by side. Just keep each listing linked to one provider, and add each one as a production partner on Etsy. If you’ve narrowed it to two, our head-to-head Printify vs Printful comparison goes product by product.

How to test providers before you commit

Reviews and comparison tables only go so far. The best test is a real one: the same design, made by two providers, side by side.

  1. Pick a product you expect to sell a lot of, such as a tee or sweatshirt.
  2. Create the same design with two providers, at the exact print-area size for each.
  3. Order samples to your own address, and to a friend abroad if you sell internationally.
  4. Compare print sharpness, color, placement, fabric feel, packaging and delivery time.
  5. Price both from your costs up, including Etsy fees, and keep the one that wins on quality at a price buyers accept.

The bottom line

Printify wins on price and choice, Printful on consistency and branding, and Gelato on local production for international buyers. For most new Etsy sellers, Printify’s free plan is the lowest-risk way to start; add a second provider when you have a product line that needs better consistency or faster international delivery.

Whatever you choose, recheck plan prices and base costs every few months, because they change, and re-run your profit numbers whenever they do. And if you’re also weighing royalty marketplaces like Redbubble or Merch on Demand, our guide to the best print-on-demand sites explains how they differ from providers like these three.

Frequently asked questions

Is Printify or Printful better for Etsy?
Printify usually has lower base costs and a bigger catalog because it’s a marketplace of independent print partners, so it suits new and price-focused sellers. Printful produces orders in its own facilities, so quality tends to be more consistent and it offers more branding options, at higher base prices.
Can I use Printify, Printful and Gelato in the same Etsy shop?
Yes. Each provider connects to your Etsy shop separately and manages the listings it creates. Keep every listing linked to one provider, and add each provider you use as a production partner in your Etsy settings.
Do I need a paid plan to sell on Etsy with these providers?
No. All three have free plans and charge you for each product only when an order comes in. Paid plans such as Printify Premium or Printful Growth make sense once your monthly sales are high enough for the discounts to exceed the fee.
Which provider is best for international Etsy orders?
Gelato is built for it: it routes each order to a local production partner, in 32 countries at the time of writing, so items travel shorter distances. Printful also aims to fulfill from a facility near the buyer, while Printify ships from the print partner you chose for each product.
Are Printify and Printful the same company?
They share a parent company, Fyul, but at the time of writing they still run as separate platforms with their own catalogs, prices, plans and integrations.
